When the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 arrives next spring, it will instantly become the best 5.0L Coyote V8-equipped Mustang that money can buy. Ford has seemingly created a budget GT350 in some respects, but until now, no one outside of Ford has really had time to dig into one. Fortunately, British automotive personality Richard Hammond managed to briefly snatch one away from The Blue Oval for a video, and he shared his impressions of the car under the guise of a virtual Q&A session.

Interestingly enough, Ford loaned Hammond a 2021 Mustang Mach 1 with the Mach 1 Appearance Package. That optional kit features an exclusive Mustang color, Fighter Jet Gray, and other cosmetic enhancements designed to give the model an even more distinctive look. Hammond didn’t comment on the Mach 1’s aesthetic as it relates to the package, but he did offer a well-reasoned take on the new variant.

As the owner of a 1967 Ford Mustang, Hammond understands the gravitas behind the long-running nameplate. It seems he implicitly understands his role as a vintage pony car enthusiast and automotive commentator, as the questions he chose to answer reflected his viewer’s concerns that the 2021 Mustang Mach 1 might not live up to the previous model. Basically, he concluded that the new model is legitimate:
“And it manages to be faster and to handle better without making a terrible fuss about it. It retains a sense of simplicity, of clarity of purpose. So it retains the spirit of the original.”
